SITE TO SITE LINKS
(VPN) |
Organisations with two or more
locations would benefit from linking their sites together.
Two or more office networks could safely be linked-up together,
permitting users at either end to share information and
resources as if they were all part of the same local network.
Remote offices could be just down the road or on the other
side of the world. The cost to connect them would be the
same with a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Sites can be linked using leased lines, ISDN or by using a VPN to transfer data
across the Internet. Leased lines are still quite expensive and are generally
only used by larger companies. ISDN is comparatively slow and can also be expensive
if the lines are used for long periods of time. ADSL internet connections are
fast and offer a continuous link for a relatively low cost.
Secure links can be established over the Internet by using VPN to ensure privacy.
VPN creates secure tunnels to each destination and all data that is passed down
these tunnels is completely encrypted, which stops any information from being
corrupted, lost or intercepted. Remote workers can establish network connections
from any location using their local Internet connection with standard dial-up
access, but it is more effective with a high speed ‘always on’ broadband
Internet connection.
A VPN would also provide IT support staff with the means to immediately connect
to servers or workstations to resolve problems and provide assistance to end
users, cutting out the need for site visits.
